The Cicadadas Are Singing

In movies, the sound of crickets at night is supposed to indicate a peaceful country setting…a comforting lullaby that sends you off to sleep.

Well, I’m never lulled by that creek-creek-creek sound. It keeps me awake, though the sound dulls and I can eventually doze off.

Not so with the cicadas’ calls. Those noisy little males are looking for mates, which makes my morning stroll through the gardens anything but peaceful.

In my last trip through our little orchard, I met one of these ugly buggers up close when a non-too-gentlemanly bug flew at me as I walked past his stage. Now, being the girly girl that I am, I damn near jumped into the tree that he was aiming for. Fortunately, I kept my wits about me long enough to realize it wasn’t an alien going for my throat but a cicada looking for action.

So to you, Mr. Cicada, I say this: get yourself a buggy girl and quiet the hell up…and stop scaring poor women who just want to look at pretty flowers. – Stacey Morgan Smith
