We had a wonderful time picking and cutting our own Christmas tree at Mountain View Farm outside of Woodstock, Virginia. Just 15 minutes from our home here in the Shenandoah Valley, the friendly owners described the different trees, loaned us a saw, and thoroughly cleaned out the dead needles. They also provided a nice cart to haul the tree from the “forest” back to the car.
To add atmosphere to the experience, a few snowflakes floated down as we searched for the right tree. 14 strokes, and we had our tree — a pretty little fir about 7 feet tall (Tim is 6’2″, so I’m guessing!) for $40.
Mountain View Tree Farm is located at 2155 Ritenour Road in Edinburg, Virginia, off of 42 (Reservoir Road) West of Woodstock. They are open weekends after Thanksgiving, Friday through Sunday, 10am – 5pm. You can call the farm at 540-459-5584.
***January 16th, 2010 – UPDATE***
This tree is officially the best we’ve ever purchased! It drank a lot of water the weeks up to Christmas. It slowed around the 22nd, and we stopped watering on Christmas Day. We never had to sweep up dead needles, nor did we hear the dreaded “tinkling” sound of the dry needles falling through the ornaments and hitting the floor. I don’t know how well the video will show, but when we pulled branches through our hands, no needles came off. I highly recommend cutting your own tree at Mountain View Christmas Tree Farm!
